Simba’s Story

Last year, we received a call from a woman living in a cold camper with her animals. She told us her cat was very sick and lethargic, but she couldn’t afford medical care. When we had her bring him to our vet, we discovered that Simba was diabetic and needed frequent medical attention and insulin. Knowing he required more care than she could provide, she made the difficult decision to surrender him to our rescue. Since then, Simba has been thriving in our foster system, bringing joy with his loving personality—always wanting to be on our laps, jumping on the sink to drink from the faucet, and eagerly asking for treats.

Minutes away from going to heaven

On Saturday, Simba became lethargic and stopped eating as usual. Fearing an upper respiratory infection and unsure about giving his insulin without knowing his sugar levels, we rushed him to VREC Westbury. Extensive tests revealed he was in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a life-threatening condition. The vet presented euthanasia as an option due to his age and declining condition.

It was an agonizing decision, but as I held him in my arms, giving him treats before saying goodbye, Simba surprised us all—he suddenly perked up and devoured them. In that moment, I knew we had to fight for him. We chose life.

Simba’s Ongoing Battle

Simba spent two nights in the hospital on IV fluids and medications before transferring to our primary vet, Garden City Vet Care. He is now on a glucose monitor, requiring frequent scans and careful monitoring. He still has ketones in his bloodwork, meaning he’s not out of the woods yet, but the vets believe his condition is manageable with proper care.

How You Can Help

Simba’s emergency hospital stay alone cost $3,800, not including his ongoing treatments and testing. As a rescue, these costs are beyond what we can handle alone, but putting Simba down on Saturday purely for financial reasons was never an option.

We won’t give up on Simba. He deserves this chance. And with your support, we can make sure he gets it.

Help us Save Simba

Every dollar helps keep him fighting. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for being part of Simba’s journey to recovery.
